S.O.S. - I need change! Do you ever feel the need for change?
This is what my studio looks like this morning . . .
and this . . .
I won't even show you my office (there are splashes of a very pretty somewhat chalky purple, and very muted sea grass green on the wall as I try to decide which direction to go with its minor makeover).
Fellow artist and creative entrepreneur Lisa Sonora Beam tells us "Visually-oriented people experience a paradox when it comes to organizing. We need to see everything in order to work. But then having everything out is overwhelming to our senses and design aesthetic. The visual person loves a well-designed environment after all."
Yes, yes, Lisa - you are speaking to my creative heart. I like clean & tidy, in fact I feel most peaceful in clean & tidy. But, I do, I do need to see all my paints, crayons, pens, books, and all that helps me be creative. So, where's the happy medium (no pun intended)?
I WANT my creative space to look a bit like this
love the robin's egg blue, the L-shape work space, and that inspiration/project board.
Hmm, I do have several deadline's looming, yet I am resisting diving into them. I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the fresh ideas swirling and twirling around in my head, waiting to manifest in some creative form, the creative content (ahem creative mess) that surrounds me in the pics I've shared with you, and that which I must immediately respond to - those deadlines.
I'm finding that in order for me to continue to pour out my creativity, I must also pour in some creativity. Are you a creative spirit? How do you fill yourself up? For me, this may take the form of creating for fun (with abandon and no particular objective in mind - art that may or may not eventually be licensed); taking play breaks like jumping on the trampoline with my girls, or even a long walk, coffee and conversation with a girlfriend. It's all about balance, baby.
To relieve the sense of overwhelm, I really like Lisa's 3 step method of subtract, sort & store, along with responding to my own need to play a little with my creativity. You know the ol' saying, all work and no play . . .
On that note, creating for fun - Yesterday, my daughter Katelyn and I spent the afternoon recovering our dining chairs. I'll share pics and how to in my next post.
If you're looking for a little something to "play with" your creativity, take a peek at our new etsy store heartandhandcrafted. More craft supplies, heart&handcrafted gifts, as well as signed pieces from my licensed product lines will all be available there soon.
Til we meet again, have a blommin' beautiful day!
