For the secret of the sea,
And the heart of the great ocean
Sends a thrilling pulse through me.
- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Oh, how I am longing for the sea!
Truly, genuinely, absolutely, longing . . .
I grew up living and playing at the beach. It was my childhood playground all summer long. The typical salutation in our high school year books was, "see ya at lifeguard station no. 2." Where did you play as a child?
As a single adult, I spent my years in Corona Del Mar, enjoying my morning run to, and quiet time at the precipice of the bluffs - it was pure bliss, but for one missing piece. In June, 1994, I left this beautiful community in search of something (really, someone! I was 34 and wanted what I could not find there . . . a relationship, marriage and children).
It's been far too long since I could step outside my little beach bungalow and walk to the sea.
Oh, how I am longing for
the sea! I want to pack my little family up to return - hmm, how do I make this possible?
Do come with me as we dip our toes into the sweet salt water, wrap ourselves in the warmth of the summer sun, and perhaps even enjoy a buttery, slightly oak-y yet crisp glass of chardonnay together -
This is beautiful, inviting outdoor living in these pics - I could (and surely would) gleefully spend an entire afternoon snuggled into one of these porch swings visiting with friends, talking the day away, letting go of all cares & concerns - simply breathing in the moment - full, fresh & oh so pleasant. Will you join me?
This is the perfect time of year to feature coastal collections in your shop, or to create some creative - inexpensive - vignettes in your home to bring yourself closer to the sea.
1. Fill mason jars with sand and shells, cover the lid with burlap or rough linen and tie jute around the jar
2. Switch out a couple pieces of wall decor in your entryway, common bath, or family room and bring in some natural elements like grasscloth, bamboo and a palm plant
3. Fill the air with beach themed music (hint: we've added some terrific selections to our playlist - feel free to grab them)
4. Candles (a must for ambiance, don't you agree)
This door is a wonderfully textural touch with the chippy wood and shells and starfish.
